Gabalfa (pronounced ɡəˈbælvə) is a small community north of Cardiff, Wales. In Welsh, its name is roughly translated as “place to meet the ferry” as it was once the location for a ferry crossing to take passengers across the river Taff. It is also the childhood home of our founder’s mother. She grew up in a council house in Gabalfa, the rough equivalent to growing up in the projects here in the US. Much as Gabalfa was once a place from which to be transported, we hope you find that our books will do the same and transport you as readers.
Thank you for visiting Gabalfa Press. This spring we’re excited to publish our inaugural title, Zek: An American Prison Story, by Arthur Longworth. Early marketing reviews have been wholly positive. Miguel Ferguson, Associate Professor at University of Texas School of Social Work, and the founder of “Words Beyond Walls,” a prisoner/student education program says, “The prologue to Zek may be the finest bit of prison writing I have ever encountered. The novel uses astonishing detail to steadily draw the reader into a routine day in the life of a prison abyss, a world where the struggle to maintain one’s humanity clashes with a desperate fight for survival. For those interested in learning about what the prison experience does to the human spirit, it is not to be missed.”
